In 2024, the services of Flemish Minister for Animal Welfare Ben Weyts (N-VA) received nearly 7,500 reports of animal cruelty, setting a new record, reports De Zondag.

A total of 818 seizures were carried out, involving approximately 5,500 animals.

“This does not mean that more animals are being abused or neglected, but rather that the people of Flanders have become more sensitive to animal welfare and have more confidence that their reports will be taken seriously,” said Minister Weyts.

A total of 6,375 inspections were conducted. These inspections resulted in 880 official reports and 1,540 warnings. Additionally, 479 fines were issued. The recognition of 17 breeders was also withdrawn.
