Train traffic between Antwerp and Brussels will be disrupted by construction work during the last three weekends of April and the first weekend of May, rail network manager Infrabel announced on Thursday.

National railway operator SNCB/NMBS will provide an adjusted timetable.

The work will take place on railway lines 25 and 27 between Antwerp-Central and Brussels-Midi railway stations. Infrabel will be working on the Vaartbrug near Mechelen station, among other things. They will also be working on the sensors that detect trains and on the overhead lines along the route. In addition, Infrabel will be carrying out general maintenance work.

As a result, there will be disruptions to rail traffic during the weekends from 12 April to 4 May. Traffic will not be completely interrupted, but there will be fewer trains running. SNCB/NMBS is providing an alternative schedule, which can be consulted via the website and the app.

April strikes

There will also be nationwide disruptions to train travel this coming Tuesday (15 April) due to a series of strike actions this month. Five trade union organisations are organising the strike to protest against certain measures in the Federal Government coalition agreement.

"The measures in the coalition agreement remain a source of great concern for all railway workers," said the unions. "They threaten our pension rights, reduce job security, worsen working conditions and compromise staff welfare."

Based on staff who have indicated they will work, an alternative train service has been worked out. The alternative train service will be visible in SNCB/NMBS' online journey planner, via the app and website.

24-hour actions are also expected on 22 and 29 April.
