Pope Francis recognised the heroic virtues of Belgian priest Pierre-Joseph Triest (1760-1836) on Monday through an official decree from the Vatican.

This recognition marks a significant step in the beatification process, granting Triest the title of "venerable."

To be beatified, a miracle attributed to his intercession must be recognised by the Vatican, signifying that he is believed to have spiritually intervened to help people on Earth.

A potential canonisation, which acknowledges sainthood, would require a second miracle.

Pierre-Joseph Triest founded several religious congregations, including the Brothers of Charity and the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary. He played a major social role in Ghent in the early 19th century.

The beatification cause was opened on 26 August 2001 in the Diocese of Ghent.

The diocesan process concluded on 15 November 2015. The case was then sent to Rome, where it was officially accepted on 18 November 2015.
