This week, a flu epidemic has been declared in Belgium by the Sciensano public health institute. The information was confirmed by virologist Marc Van Ranst. What symptoms should people be aware of?
One in five patients who currently visit their general practitioner with flu-like symptoms has been suffering from the flu. Sciensano cited an official figure of 22% of patients testing positive for flu – beyond the 20% threshold that fits the definition of 'epidemic'.
According to Van Ranst, the timing is "particularly striking". He explained to RTBF that "in 2020, the peak of the epidemic was not recorded until mid-February."
Yet he said that it is still too early to say for sure which variant of the flu virus is circulating and to what extent the vaccine is effective against it.
Flu symptoms
According to the French medical intelligence service, Vidal, if you feel unwell, tired and notice that you are shivering, it is likely that you have caught the flu.
These symptoms are often followed by a fever, a dry and painful cough, severe muscle and joint pain and headaches. Note that the fever can be quite high, at around 39°C.
It is advised to contact your doctor should you experience one or more of these symptoms.
