The Flemish expertise centre for sexual health, Sensoa, has come up with new guidelines in sexual education to support teachers. The company has created four new learning guides to help teachers determine what sex ed' to be teaching depending on the age of the students.

The four new guidelines include two for primary school and two for secondary school, each for regular and special education. The guides are meant to help teachers who don't know what they should say or what their students are ready to learn about. The timing is important when teaching about sex ed.

Sensoa advises teachers to start educating their students ahead of the age at which the behaviour starts to occur. For example, if you teach 12-14-year-olds and you know that some 14-year-olds have begun having sex, then you would begin having lessons about safe sex at that age.

For times when some students are ready for one lesson and others are not, it is up to the schools and teachers to decide what to teach given that they know the students best. Sensoa's new guidelines come with no obligations and are meant to be a helpful tool for teachers. The guidelines are not a new curriculum but are based on developmental and psychological research.
