The seals of Antwerp Zoo are temporarily moving to an abroad location because their current basins have become insufficient as they no longer meet the requirements of animal welfare.
The seven seals will move to other zoos before they can return to Antwerp in a few years.
With the renovation of the Jubilee Complex, the sea lions have moved into the seal's exhibit, and in turn, the seals were relocated to the pelican pond. The relocation was meant to be temporary, but Covid-19 pushed things back.
Seals need a specific water quality to swim in and a piece of land to rest on that the zoo cannot guarantee this at the moment. This has forced the zoo to look for other temporary locations for its seals.

One female seal has already moved to Italy, where she was born, and the rest will make their move in the summer. Two males will move to Neeltje Jans and the rest will move to a zoo in Poland.
The zoo intends to return the seals to their home at the Antwerp Zoo once the renovations finish. There is currently no timeline but the zoo is hopeful that renovations will be complete in a few years.
