Four Delhaize shops are closed on Tuesday following further industrial action. These are branches located in Nivelles and three others in the province of Liège in Embourg, Seraing and Sart-Tilman.
“Bailiffs have been sent to the site to make the necessary observations,” explained Delhaize spokesperson Roel Dekelver.
Delhaize had obtained a ban on picketing for all shops and distribution centres in Belgium from the Brussels court of first instance, but this expired last week.
In early June, the court of first instance in Walloon Brabant had also ruled in favour of the socialist union in its opposition to management’s use of unilateral demands to stop picketing. The Ghent Court of First Instance handed down a similar ruling last week.
Yesterday, several Brussels Delhaize locations spontaneously went on strike. On 17 June, a peaceful protest of around 100 staff and customers gathered at the Flagey branch in Brussels and entered the supermarket singing and chanting.

The labour dispute at Delhaize has been going on since early March, when the supermarket chain announced its intention to franchise its own shops in Belgium.
