For hikers looking for a unique nature experience, an "art trail" that showcases more than 55 works of art over an impressive 155 kilometres can be found in Wallonia.
The Sentiers d'Art en Condroz-Famenne weaves through seven charming municipalities in Wallonia.
Crafted by both local and international artists, these creations belong to an artistic movement known as Land Art, which emerged during the 1960s. Land Art thrives as an often ephemeral outdoor expression where nature's elements like branches, rocks, foliage and hay serve as mediums of artistic ingenuity.
The very temporality of these biodegradable creations defines their allure. While the art pieces within the Sentier d'Art en Condroz-Famenne are destined to grace the landscape for several years, they embrace the essence of the Land Art philosophy. In a recent addition, the trail now boasts six magnificent murals reflecting the vibrant Street Art movement.
Beyond the artworks themselves, the trail offers unique and poetic shelters, inviting hikers to find solace or reprieve amidst the captivating surroundings. The trail even offers designated bivouac areas for those seeking an overnight escape into nature's embrace.
However, a word of advice: allocate more time than indicated on the area’s tourism website, as the journey tends to unfold more leisurely than anticipated. To make the most of this enchanting experience, early departures are recommended.
With 19 family-friendly circuits ranging from 4 to 12 kilometres, the Sentiers d'Art appeals to both seasoned hikers and families with children. The only distinction lies in the markings: hikers follow loop markers, while families should rely on maps available for €5.
Don't forget to pack a hearty picnic, as provisions along the trail are scarce.
