Brussels citizens will be consulted over the coming months on how better to structure the powers and institutions of the capital-region, Brussels Minister for Local Authorities Bernard Clerfayt announced on Tuesday.

The minister has been mandated by the regional government to sound out the citizens of Brussels, who are the first to be affected by the functioning of their institutions, but also the actors concerned by the themes to be addressed, in connection with the functioning of the country's central region.

The consultative process, dubbed 'Futures of Brussels,' will be divided into three phases and end just before the summer of 2023.

The first phase will start on 7 November, with a representative group of 1,000 Brussels residents questioned via an online survey.

Phase II, in February-March 2023, will be devoted to debates between institutional actors (political, administrative, associative, etc.) on given themes, and more specific questions on the institutional functioning of the region.

The last phase will hinge on meetings between citizens and institutional representatives in March and April 2023.

The final report is expected by September 2023.
