Micromobility provider Bolt is expanding its fleet of shared e-bikes in Brussels with the deployment of over 1,000 new bikes in the Belgian capital on Friday – meaning a total of 2,500 e-bikes are now available in the city.

While shared e-scooters remain the most used option, micromobility data shows that the average trip distance has increased by 25% over the past year, now averaging 3 km. This shift is driving more users toward e-bikes. Indeed, e-bike usage has risen by 27% in the past 12 months.

"User trends show that e-bikes have become an essential mode of transport for daily trips. Expanding our fleet fully aligns with the objectives of the Good Move Plan, which aims to promote alternatives to private cars and improve urban mobility," said Alexis Hiernaux, Head of Micromobility Operations at Bolt Benelux.

This trend is particularly noticeable during peak hours, with significant usage spikes between 08:00 and 10:00 and 16:00 and 18:00 – highlighting the increasing role of e-bikes in daily commutes. The bikes also offer practical advantages, such as built-in baskets for carrying bags and personal belongings.

Less congestion

"By strengthening our shared e-bike offering and optimising their integration into public spaces in collaboration with the City of Brussels, we are actively contributing to a more accessible and less congested city," said Hiernaux.

Bolt is also introducing a new, lighter e-bike model in Brussels, designed for improved comfort and manoeuvrability. They are equipped with inflatable tires instead of solid ones, and provide better grip.

This expansion is now possible due to the recent adjustment of Brussels' micromobility offering. Initially, Bolt was told to limit its fleet deployment to prevent overcrowding in designated drop zones, which were set up to accommodate 7,500 shared bikes.

However, the departure of several operators – aligned with the objectives set by the City of Brussels in its public tender – has freed up space, allowing Bolt to increase its fleet while maintaining a balanced micromobility ecosystem.
