Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates paid a visit to Brussels' sewer system on Sunday.
In a short video posted on Instagram, the 68-year-old American revealed that he had visited Brussels Sewer Museum to commemorate World Toilet Day.
"What am I doing 30-feet underground in Brussels?" Gates noted. "Going into the sewer. It stinks!"
"In the 1880s, the sewage got dumped into the Senne River. That led to horrible cholera epidemics," he added. "Today, a 200-mile network of sewers and treatment plants process [sic] the city's waste."
In the video, Gates also dons a pair of gloves and goggles before extracting a sample of the city's wastewater.
"Scientists test wastewater for Covid, polio, and other diseases," he said. "This work helps prevent future pandemics. Thank you, Brussels, for showing a unique side of your amazing city!"
