China has urged the United States to completely revoke reciprocal import tariffs following the recent exemption for smartphones and laptops.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated, “We call on the United States to take a significant step to correct their mistakes, fully roll back the reciprocal tariffs, and return to the path of mutual respect.”

The ministry in Beijing labelled the exemption for smartphones, computers, and other electronic products as “a small step.”

On Friday, Washington announced that these products would be exempt from the unprecedentedly high import tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Tech giant Apple, for example, manufactures iPhones in China.

While Trump has paused tariffs to negotiate with many countries, he has engaged in a trade war with China.

The US imposes tariffs of up to 145% on imports from China, while Beijing imposes tariffs of up to 125% on American products.
