Two workers at the Borssele nuclear power plant in the Netherlands have been contaminated by radioactive substances, the Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant (PZC) newspaper reported on Saturday. Both were wearing respiratory protection and did not suffer any internal contamination.
The incident occurred on 26 November 2024, but was only made public last week. During work, a small quantity of radioactive substances was released and detected by measuring equipment. The alarm was triggered and the room was evacuated.
Radioactive substances touched the skin of two workers. A third worker in the room was not wearing respiratory protection but immediately went outside when the alarm went off. He was not contaminated.
The three workers underwent additional tests, the results of which showed no internal contamination. The area was also cleaned and the work completed.
EPZ, the nuclear power plant operator, is investigating the cause of the incident. However, the company stresses that the event "had no consequences for nuclear safety."
