Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for a common European army at the Munich Security Conference.

Europe should shape its own future amid increasing Russian threats and weakening American engagement, Zelenskyy said. “The time has come for a European army,” he added.

He assured NATO Secretary General and “good friend” Mark Rutte that this army would not replace NATO.

Zelenskyy emphasised the need for equal European and American security contributions.

US Vice President JD Vance stated on Friday that the long-standing Europe-US relationship will change. “From now on, everything will be different, and Europe must prepare for it,” warned Zelenskyy.

US President Donald Trump wants to reduce America’s contribution to Europe’s defence. Zelenskyy urged a strong Europe due to uncertainties about the US stance towards it as either a market or ally. “President Trump does not like weak friends. He respects strength,” said Zelenskyy.

He also addressed frustrations with the European Union in Brussels. “But let it be clear: if not Brussels, then it’s Moscow,” Zelenskyy warned.
