Seven radiologists at Antwerp’s ZNA Cadix hospital have lost their jobs following an investigation into their radiology examinations.
The decision, announced on 7 June, was based on significant findings from an internal audit. It “was taken to ensure operational continuity and maintain calm at ZNA Cadix, safeguarding the interests of our patients, staff, and physicians,” the hospital said in a statement issued on Thursday evening.
The investigation scrutinised 1,300 cases, of which 500 were rigorously examined. Of these, 52 were identified as potentially influencing patient safety, prompting the hospital to contact 24 patients.
ZNA Cadix "has concluded that continuing collaboration with the implicated radiologists is untenable," the hospital said in its statement. "It has been determined that the medical imaging service does not meet universally accepted quality standards.”
Trust could not be reestablished with six of the physicians, while the seventh was offered the chance to continue working at the hospital under supervised conditions but declined, according to the statement.
ZNA Cadix said it would continue its investigations and take additional action where necessary. It also said the personal responsibility of the radiologists remained “fully applicable.”
