Exposure to fine particles reduces the healthy lifespan of Flemish residents by an average of 15 months, according to figures released on Tuesday by Statistiek Vlaanderen, the Flemish statistical office.

Data from 2022 shows that 151 healthy years were lost per 10,000 inhabitants in the Flemish Region that year, due to exposure to fine particles. These figures translate into an average reduction by 15 months of a healthy lifespan, based on the population’s average life expectancy of 82.6 years.

Research undertaken by Statistiek Vlaanderen shows that the impact of fine particles has barely altered since 2021. In 2020, 143 healthy years of life were lost per 10,000 people due to the same cause.

Long-term exposure to particles with a diameter less than 2.5 micrometers affects people's health. In 2022, the effects of this type of particle constituted 97% of the total health impact from fine particles.

Predominantly emitted by traffic, especially diesel engines, these particles can also come from brake and tyre wear. Industrial factories and households can also release them, particularly when using open fires or wood-burning stoves.
