Former Brazilian president Fernando Collor de Mello, who held office between 1990 and 1992, was sentenced to eight years and 10 months in prison on Wednesday by Brazil’s Supreme Court.

Collor de Mello had been found guilty earlier this month of corruption and money laundering in a case revolving around 30 million reals (€5.6 million) in bribes Collor de Mello allegedly received from a subsidiary of oil company Petrobas.

The now 73-year-old ex-president was ousted in 1992 over corruption charges.

Six out of 10 Supreme Court judges found him guilty on 18 May, making the conviction already certain.
