Ukraine will negotiate with Russia once Kyiv, the United States and their allies have a common position, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday. He noted that US President Donald Trump did not have a "ready-made plan" to end the war.

Zelenskyy also thanked US Vice-President JD Vance for his "strong" words, following an interview in the Wall Street Journal. Vance had spoken of his support for "Ukraine's sovereignty" and possible "means of military pressure" to put pressure on Russia. The two are due to meet in Munich at the security conference on Friday.

"We are ready to talk to America and our allies. If they provide us with specific answers to our specific requests and if there is a common understanding of the Putin danger, then, with this unified position, we will be ready to talk with the Russians," said Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the conference.

No 'ready-made plan'

He also told the press that the United States did not have a finalised plan to end the war in Ukraine. Trump also broke the status quo and the West's isolation of Putin by calling him on Wednesday and proclaiming the start of negotiations.

"I cannot see that the US has a ready-made plan," Zelenskyy stressed, saying he was "ready to talk about everything: the contingent (of peacekeepers), security guarantees, NATO."

Throwing a spanner in the works this week, Trump deemed it unrealistic for Ukraine to join NATO, as this is a red line set for Russia.

"We are ready for any construction to stop Putin. We are open, but we want to act within the framework of international law," said Zelenskyy.
