Spain intends to equip the Ukrainian army with modern battle tanks of German design, providing Ukraine with the first high-tech Western tanks, Spanish daily El Pais reports.
The Leopard 2 A4s are currently in a warehouse and are yet to be made operational before any deployment, according to El Pais, citing sources at the Spanish Ministry of Defence.
Ukrainian crews would first be trained in Lithuania and then in Spain.
Madrid is also preparing to supply a battery of Italian-made Aspide anti-aircraft missiles. The Aspide surface-to-air missiles are no longer used by the Spanish army.
