Former Pakistani prime minister, Imran Khan, has been shot and wounded in an attack on a protest march in the eastern city of Wazirabad. One of the former prime minister’s aides has claimed that Khan was deliberately targeted by gunmen.

According to information released by Khan’s PTI party, four other people were injured during the shooting. The Pakistani leader was ousted during a vote of no-confidence in April. At the time of the attack, Khan was leading a protest in favour of a snap election, which would see the Pakistani politician return to power.

Khan was brought to a hospital in Lahore where he is being treated for a bullet in the shin. The former PM is reported to be in a stable position. One suspect has been arrested in relation to the attack. It is unclear whether the politician and former cricketer was deliberately targeted or hit by stray rounds.
