At least 700 people have been killed in clashes this week in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to the United Nations.

Over 2,800 individuals have been injured, the UN reports, based on data from the World Health Organization, partner organisations, and the government.

There is concern that the clashes, which pit the Congolese army and the Rwanda-backed rebel group M23, could escalate into a larger conflict.

The rebels seized control of a significant portion of Goma, a major city near the Rwandan border and the capital of North Kivu province, on Monday.

The army launched a counteroffensive, but the rebels are advancing rapidly in the region.

Bukavu, capital of South Kivu province, is also under threat:  the UN reports that the M23 is within 60 kilometres of Bukavu.

The leader of the rebel group has said he intends to advance on the Congolese capital, Kinshasa.
