Pope Francis, recovering from a severe lung infection, made an unexpected appearance in St. Peter’s Square after Palm Sunday Mass.
The 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church was wheeled into the square, where he greeted attendees. Francis returned to the Vatican three weeks ago after spending 38 days in hospital. Doctors advised him to take it easy for six weeks.
Last Sunday marked his first public appearance since his return. On Wednesday, he received King Charles and Queen Camilla, despite their meeting initially being cancelled.
The Pope’s recent surprise appearances have sparked speculation about his participation in upcoming Easter celebrations. Traditionally, this includes the Urbi et Orbi (to the city and the world) blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Vatican stated that his participation will also depend on the weather conditions.
