Costa Rican authorities have seized 1.3 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a container loaded with cassava flour, destined for Belgium, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Tuesday.
Officials discovered 1,374 packages of cocaine during a search on Monday at the Caribbean Port of Limón, 150 km east of the capital, San José, according to Minister Mario Zamora.
This is the fourth drug seizure at the port this month, a key departure point for Costa Rican exports to Europe and North America.
Costa Rica has become a transit country for drugs from South America heading to Europe and the United States, the world's largest cocaine market.
With this operation, Costa Rican authorities have seized more than seven tonnes of cocaine in 2024. In 2023, they confiscated 21.3 tonnes, according to the Costa Rican Drug Institute.
