Chris Seynaeve from the town of Izegem in West Flanders reached the finish line of the 6633 Arctic Ultra ultramarathon in northern Canada on Friday evening.
The 6633 Arctic Ultra is a gruelling ultramarathon over various distances in temperatures ranging from -30 to -40 degrees, ending at the Arctic Circle.
Last year, ultrarunner Seynaeve completed the 402 km course. This year, he took on the longest route of 611 km.
Seynaeve started his journey on 1 March and crossed the finish line on Friday evening in -29 degrees Celsius weather.
“After two or three days of bad luck, I had to push through,” said the 44-year-old athlete on social media. “I’ve done a lot of thinking and have decided to hang up my running shoes for good. I’m happy my body still copes, but I won’t push it to the extreme anymore. It’s unique to be able to participate in this.”
The runner raised money for a good cause through his challenge as the proceeds will be donated to the Tejo House in Izegem, a mental health organization for young people.
