The peak of departures by car to France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy is expected on the weekends of 28 to 30 July and 4 to 6 August, insurance company Touring announced on Monday.

At the end of June and beginning of July, holidaymakers will encounter few problems on the road, the organisation predicted. However, from the third week in July (around 114 to 16 July), the roads will be much busier with the peak in departures expected from 28 to 30 July and 4 to 6 August.

Saturday 15, 22 and 29 July will be particularly busy, as will Friday 28 July. Motorists are advised to avoid these days and plan their departures for Sundays.

Heavy traffic in August

The first weekend in August is classified as black, meaning that there will be extremely heavy traffic with huge traffic jams, and will be the busiest of the summer, Touring warned. Friday 4 and Saturday 6 should be avoided at all costs. Traffic will be a little smoother on Sunday 6 August, but congestion will still be a possibility.

The following weekend is classified as red, meaning that circulation will be difficult with long traffic jams expected as it will be the last weekend in which such a large group of holidaymakers are expected to make the journey to enjoy the last bits of the summer sun.

For the return journey, Touring is expecting the first traffic problems on Saturday 22 July, with very heavy traffic. However, the queues will be less heavy, classified as orange, in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

The peak is expected to be from 11 to 13 August and from 18 to 20 August, with Saturday being the busiest day on each occasion, and is therefore suggested to be avoided.

Fridays and Mondays will be the best travel days in the return direction, with busy but fluid traffic.
