The number of hedgehogs in Brussels and Flanders has decreased by half over the past 10 years, a new study says.
The study was conducted by the University of Ghent along with Natuurpunt, a nature protection agency, and the Institute for Nature and Forest Research (INBO).
The cause of the hedgehog decline is not yet clear, Bruzz reported. The animals are killed by cars, but the insects they eat have also been in short supply. Further research is needed to determine the reason for the hedgehog population loss.
To increase hedgehog numbers, Natuurpunt recommends homeowners create openings in garden fences for hedgehogs to travel through, which would reduce their need to cross roads.
