Four people, including the suspected perpetrator, have been arrested following a fatal stabbing in the French city of Mulhouse on Saturday, according to the French anti-terrorism prosecutor on Sunday.
Police reported on Saturday evening that a 37-year-old man, born in Algeria, had been detained. The suspect was on a counter-terrorism watchlist, but no information has been disclosed about his motive.
French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as a “terrorist act” of an “Islamic nature.” A 69-year-old Portuguese man was killed in the attack, and five others were injured, including two parking attendants and three police officers. Local media, including news site L’Alsace, reported that two of the injured are in critical condition.
The French government will hold an interministerial council on immigration on Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot revealed to radio station Europe 1 on Sunday.
