A total of 230 tonnes of waste were collected between 20 and 23 March during the ‘Grand Nettoyage’ (Grand Cleanup) in Wallonia, organiser Be WaPP reported on Wednesday.
Throughout the region, about 100,000 volunteers collected 152 tonnes of residual waste and 78 tonnes of plastic, metal, and drink cartons (PMD). This amounted to a total of 230,000 kilogrammes of waste, roughly 2.32 kilogrammes per participant.
The most waste was gathered in Liège (75.6 tonnes) and Hainaut (73.5 tonnes).
This year, a Twitch event featuring popular Belgian influencers was organised to raise awareness on the issue among young people.
