The film Young Mothers by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne will compete in the 78th Cannes Film Festival, announced Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the event, on Thursday.
In this tenth feature film presented in competition on the Croisette, the brothers delve into the story of Jessica, Perla, Julie, Ariane, and Naïma, who are housed in a maternal home that helps them navigate their lives as young mothers.
The Dardenne brothers, regulars at the festival, are part of an exclusive group of directors who have won the Palme d’Or twice, for Rosetta in 1999 and L’Enfant in 2005.
Out of 13 feature films directed by the brothers, 11 have been presented at the Cannes Festival, and 10 in the official competition.
Besides the two Palmes, the duo have won six major awards: the Best Actress Award (Émilie Dequenne) for Rosetta in 1999, the Best Actor Award (Olivier Gourmet) for The Son in 2002, the Best Screenplay Award for The Silence of Lorna in 2008, the Grand Prix for The Kid with a Bike in 2011, the Best Director Award for Young Ahmed in 2019, and a special prize at the 75th edition of the festival for Tori and Lokita in 2022.
The Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 13 to 24 in the French coastal city.
