The Belgian army is transitioning to cloud technology next year to partially replace traditional data centres, Defence Minister Theo Francken (N-VA) announced, as reported by De Morgen on Thursday.
Francken has allocated a total of €61 million to enhance Belgium’s cyber defence. Moving to the cloud is one of three major projects funded by this budget.
The minister asserts these investments will be "a pure necessity" by 2025.
"The reality is harsh. Belgium has repeatedly been the target of sophisticated cyberattacks. The impact of such attacks is amplified by the presence of international institutions in our country," Francken stated.
Belgium hosts NATO’s headquarters, the SHAPE military command centre, and the European institutions.
The funds will also support the development of a multisource threat analysis platform, an automated system to analyse data streams and respond more swiftly to threats.
Another project includes expanding monitoring tools across all non-classified Defence networks.
