A significant forest fire broke out on Saturday afternoon in Achouffe near Houffalize in the province of Luxembourg, according to the Public Service of Wallonia and the Luxembourg emergency zone.
The Luxembourg emergency services received the call at around 14:20 on Saturday.
Significant resources were deployed to combat the flames, which were spread by the wind throughout the day.
Six forest fire engines, seven tankers, and seven other vehicles were sent to the scene.
In total, 45 firefighters from the Luxembourg zone and 20 external firefighters were at work, said Luxembourg emergency zone commander Stéphane Thiry, adding that reinforcements had been requested from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps, zone Wal 5, civil protection, and the federal police.
The intervention successfully protected a house and a fish farm that were threatened by the fire, according to the Public Service of Wallonia, which noted that no specific property damage had been reported so far.
Firefighters remained on site on Saturday evening to bring the flames under control. The burnt area extended to about a hundred hectares, commander Thiry informed on Saturday evening.
The Public Service of Wallonia had warned in early April about the risk of such a scenario. The meteorological conditions at the beginning of this spring, combined with the state of the vegetation, favoured the ignition and spread of fires.
