Fines stipulated in football law should be doubled to regain their original deterrent effect, stated N-VA MP Wim Van der Donckt on Tuesday.
First established in 1998, the law sets regulations that organisers and supporters must follow to ensure safety during football matches, along with the resulting sanctions, such as administrative fines and stadium bans.
However, the amounts have not been adjusted for inflation, according to Van der Donckt. He argues that this has led to a "considerable weakening" of the sanctions' deterrent effect.
The MP also wants individuals banned from stadiums abroad to face the same restrictions in Belgium. Additionally, he advocates greater responsibility among clubs to combat drug use in their stands.
