In a directive to all of the region's municipalities, Wallonia's Minister of Local Authorities has urged a sharp reduction in energy consumption.
With the country facing an ever more severe energy crisis, the Walloon Government is calling on its municipalities and public administrations to play their part and set an example by reducing their own energy consumption.
Local authorities have been asked to identify areas where consumption could reasonably be reduced. In particular, this concerns public services, mobility and building management.

Further recommendations include turning off appliances and lighting at the end of the day, limiting the volume of paper printed and favouring digital administration over paper, giving priority to public transport as much as possible, limiting business travel and encouraging webinars and remote meetings.
These recommendations come in addition to the request that the heating in public buildings be turned down and electricity consumption regularly monitored. Municipalities are asked to consider switching off public lighting either wholly or partially between midnight and 06:00.
“Local authorities can and must be exemplary by controlling their gas and electricity consumption. This is why we appeal to your sense of responsibility and invite you to do everything possible to contribute to the effort of responsible energy consumption”, concludes the document.
