A 51-year-old man died as a result of a work accident in the Flemish city of Leuven on Monday afternoon in a freak work accident, RTL report.

A second victim suffered life-threatening injuries after the two workers were buried under a mass of sand.

The accident took place at around 15:00 on a construction site on the grounds of the Gasthuisberg University Hospital (KULeuven).

Three workers were in a six-metre-deep trench when one of the supporting walls gave way. One of the three men managed to avoid the falling sand and earth, while two others were buried.

“A 51-year-old man from Zoutleeuw (Flemish Brabant) died on the scene. Another 63-year-old worker from Heers (Limburg) was very seriously injured,” Matthew Cuadron, a local police spokesperson, told RTL.

The Leuven labour auditor has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. The investigators will assess whether all the safety rules at the site were respected.
