The exhibition commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Belgian artist's death opened on 22 August at the Félicien Rops museum in the capital of Wallonia, the province of Namur announced on Thursday.
The exhibition Félicien Rops en portraits will be on display until 25 August 2024.
The painter, draughtsman, illustrator and engraver known for his symbolism and the Parisian Fin de Siècle style died on 23 August 1898, aged 65, at his property poetically named Demi-Lune in the French commune of Corbeil-Essonnes.
To mark the anniversary of his death, the museum is presenting for the first time some fifty portraits by the multi-talented artist.
Although he did not pay much attention to his self-portraits, Félicien Rops was often taken as a model by critics, engravers, draughtsmen, printers, journalists and photographers of his time. Photographs straight out of his family albums or taken in studios in Belgium, France and Hungary are notably on display in the museum.
The exhibition is on view from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00.
