Police found 698 kg of cocaine in a lorry trailer near Ranst (Antwerp province) on Friday. The 46-year-old male driver was subsequently arrested, the Antwerp Prosecutor's Office disclosed on Sunday.
"Road Federal Police were inspecting a lorry at a motorway car park in Ranst, at approximately 21:00," detailed the statement from the Prosecutor's Office.
"During the inspection of the load, sports bags were uncovered. It turned out these contained cocaine." It was confirmed that the Federal Judicial Police will lead the ongoing investigation.
The confiscated drugs are set to be destroyed as soon as possible, the Prosecutor's Office clarified, acknowledging the problems encountered recently with destruction procedures.
The driver was brought before the courts, where the examining magistrate remanded him in custody.
