The capacity of Brussels Airport in Zaventem is set to be reduced during certain hours of the day as there will be fewer available runways operating this summer. During one weekend in June, the airport will even be operating with just one runway.

Runway 25L/07R will be closed every day from 12:00 to 05:00 until 28 June. It will only remain operational during the morning peak in passenger numbers, details Brussels Airport spokesperson Ihsane Chioua Lekhli.

Transverse runway 01/19, meanwhile, will be unavailable from 22 to 28 June between 12:00 and 05:00. During this period, all aircraft flying to or from Brussels will have to use 25R/07R, the parallel runway to the north.

The cause of the disruption is planned repairs to runway 25L/07R, which adjoins 01/19. Damage to the asphalt was found during inspections.

This would not typically require the runway to be closed, says Ihsane Chioua Lekhli. However, "it is important that renovations are undertaken for the future," she adds. In concrete terms, a new layer of asphalt will be laid in certain places.

The problems encountered are not just the consequence of normal wear and tear, but also possibly weather conditions, due to the "heavy rainfall and increasingly high temperatures" in recent months, Brussels Airport announced in a press release.

Last year, runway 25L/07R was used for 30% of all flights to and from the airport, mainly landings from the east.
