The European Commission has offered the United States a reciprocal zero tariff on the import of industrial goods, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in response to the dramatic increase in US import tariffs.
Von der Leyen stressed that the European Union remains ready to negotiate a mutually beneficial solution with Washington.
"We have even offered reciprocal zero tariffs on industrial goods, as we have successfully done with many other trade partners. Europe is always ready for a good deal, so we keep it on the table," she said after meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store in Brussels.
Last week, President Donald Trump’s administration announced a dramatic increase in tariffs on goods imported from the rest of the world. Starting Wednesday, the EU will face a 20 percent increase.
Europeans are still hoping to avert a trade war, but Von der Leyen reiterated on Monday that the EU is prepared to implement countermeasures.
