A significant portion of the southern terminal at Gatwick Airport in London was evacuated on Friday due to a security incident.

Approximately 1,000 people were made to wait outside the airport as a precaution while investigations were carried out. Sussex Police established a perimeter after having discovering a suspected prohibited item in a passenger's luggage.

"Passengers cannot enter the terminal while the evacuation is ongoing,” Gatwick Airport said in a post on social media. "The safety of our passengers and staff remains the priority."

The security alert has since been resolved, the BBC reported on Friday afternoon.

Today, around 630 flights are scheduled at Gatwick, which is the second busiest airport in the UK, after London Heathrow.

Some roads around the airport have been closed. Police are advising people to avoid the area.
