Humanity is 'playing with fire' when it comes to nuclear safety said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a memorial ceremony in Hiroshima, reported by De Morgen.

Guterres is in Japan to mark the 77th anniversary of the American atomic bombings that razed Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the ground in August 1945.

He warned of the current international crisis, which are reminiscent of events at the end of World War II and the nuclear threat during the Cold War. Guterres referred to the Russian invasion of Ukraine among other things. “Humanity is playing with fire,” he said.

The Russian ambassador to Japan wasn't welcome at the memorial ceremony today. However, he had already laid a flower wreath in Hiroshima on Thursday.

Around 140,000 people were killed in the bombing of Hiroshima, including people who died as a result of the effects of radioactive radiation.
