Merengue star Rubby Perez is among nearly 100 people who died on Monday night when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed during his performance, his managed Enrique Paulino confirmed to AFP.

The provisional death toll of the tragedy stands at 98, with more than 150 injured.

"Yes, it’s true," said Mr Paulino regarding the death of Roberto Antonio Perez Herrera, 69, adding: "We are waiting for the children to agree on funeral arrangements."

Nicknamed "the highest voice of merengue", Rubby Perez’s music reached audiences across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the world.

Several other notable personalities were also among the victims, including Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province, and former baseball players Tony Blanco and Octavio Dotel. Dotel, aged 51, had won the World Series in 2011.

Twenty-four hours after the accident, which occurred on Tuesday at around 06:45 (Belgian time), one of the worst in the history of the Dominican Republic, there is little hope of finding survivors as the death toll continues to rise.

Hundreds of rescuers were still working on Wednesday at around 07:00 (Belgian time), aided by powerful spotlights, generators, and a crane. Aerial images show a gaping hole where the nightclub’s roof used to be.

Juan Manuel Mendez, director of the emergency operations centre, assured that rescue teams would continue their efforts as long as there were missing persons and reiterated calls for people to donate blood for the more than 150 injured.
