Brussels Mobility is closing four tunnels to carry out work over the summer months. From next week, two tunnels in the east of the region will be closed for several weeks, followed by one of the busiest tunnel complexes the following week.
The calmer summer months see many people in Brussels jetting off to holiday destinations. During this time, traffic drops by 20%, making it an ideal time for road infrastructure works. This summer, four tunnels will be closed. Brussels Mobility already closed off part of the Tervuren tunnel for service works on 1 July, and another two will be closed next week.
The entire Delta tunnel in the southeast of the region – a tunnel complex which connects the A4/E411 with Avenue de Beaulieu in Auderghem – will be closed from Monday 15 July until the end of August. This means the E411 towards the centre will be closed from the Demey exit, while the loop to the Delta commuter car park (Park and Ride) will also be completely closed to traffic.
"The work involves removing asbestos and repairing and protecting the reinforced concrete ceilings," said Brussels Mobility spokesperson Inge Paemen. "Asbestos was already removed from part of the ceilings in summer 2020. This will now be finished and the ceilings will also be repaired."
A diversion will be put in place via Chaussée de Wavre, Boulevard du Souverain and Boulevard des Invalides. "Commuters may prefer to enter Brussels via the N275 La Hulpe/Foresterie," Paemen added. "Brussels Mobility will adjust the traffic lights to allow traffic on the diversion routes to flow as smoothly as possible."
Not far from the tunnel, road surface works will be carried out on the Beaulieu bridge (above the E411 and the Delta tunnel), restricting traffic on the bridge to one lane in each direction until 31 August.
Other tunnel closures
Also starting on Monday 15 July are the painting works in the Woluwe tunnel, which will be closed in both directions until 19 July. Traffic will have to go above ground there.
Additionally, one of Brussels' key tunnels, the Reyers-Centre tunnel, will be closed from Monday 22 July until 31 August as an accompanying measure for the refurbishment of Schuman Square.
Finally, from 5 August, the Tervuren tunnel shaft towards the city centre will reopen after being closed on 1 July and the tunnel shaft towards the suburbs will be closed. From then on, traffic will have to pass through the shaft towards the city centre.
