Three people were detained in the Netherlands on Saturday night on suspicion of being connected to a large fire in the city centre of Arnhem.
Two of the suspects, aged 30 and 57, are residents of Arnhem, while the third suspect, a 41-year-old man, is homeless.
According to a police spokesperson, the suspects were apprehended using CCTV footage and other information. The cause of the fire, which broke out in a shop on Wednesday night, has yet to be determined. Firefighters extinguished the flames by midnight on Thursday, allowing nearby shops to reopen on Friday and bus services to resume.
Ahmed Marcouch, the mayor of Arnhem, expressed dismay that the police believe the fire was intentionally set. “Many Arnhem residents have lost their homes and possessions, and our city centre will bear the scar forever,” Marcouch stated on social media. He condemned the act as “unacceptable and cowardly.”
