Flemish actor and television presenter Tom Waes returned to the small screen on Monday evening for the first time since his drunk-driving accident in Antwerp last November.

Appearing on the show ‘Vive le Vélo, leve de Ronde’ on VRT 1, Waes revealed that his physical recovery was less significant compared to his mental recovery. Holding back tears, he expressed his shame and guilt towards his loved ones.

Tom Waes, known for his role in the series Undercover, was seriously injured in the accident in Antwerp’s Kennedy Tunnel and later admitted to having had too much to drink. He also injured a traffic worker during the incident.

Waes has been attending physiotherapy sessions several times a week after sustaining a head trauma, broken ribs, and a fractured hip. However, he finds mental healing to be more challenging.

Discussing drunk-driving, Waes said he was shocked by his high blood-alcohol count of 2.44.

“I don’t hide that I drank way too much," he said "It was a good evening with friends, but you only realise the extent of your consumption afterwards.

"This might help people become aware of how quickly you can find yourself over the limit.”
