A three-year-old boy died of his injuries after being hit by a car on Sunday evening in Zottegem, East Flanders, while crossing the road with his mother, prosecutors said on Monday.
The accident happened at 18:00 on Sunday on a provincial road within the Flemish municipality. The mother and son crossing the road were hit by a car while attempting to cross the road.
The three-year-old was successfully resuscitated at the scene and transported in a critical condition to the University Hospital of Ghent (UZ Gent), where he later died of his injuries. The 38-year-old mother was taken to the same hospital, where she was treated for her wounds.

A traffic investigator has been appointed to the case to establish the circumstances behind the incident. The prosecutor has declined to provide further comment at this stage of the investigation.
