A serious accident occurred on Saturday afternoon along the E42 motorway from Tournai to Mons near Basècles.
Emergency services in Wallonia were alerted at 15:05 about a traffic accident along the E42/A16 motorway near Basècles, in Beloeil municipality. A fire engine, a marking truck, an ambulance, and a SMUR unit were dispatched to the scene.
The accident took place in the Tournai-Mons direction. A speeding car collided with the rear of another vehicle, which then crashed through the motorway barriers and landed on the nearby railway tracks of the L78 line. Rail traffic was halted during the firefighters and rescuers’ intervention.
The Mons-Tournai prosecutor confirmed around 16:30 that the driver of the struck vehicle was hospitalised in a serious condition. Judicial authorities reported that the driver responsible for the accident was taken into custody and interrogated by the police pending a decision from the prosecutor’s office.
