US President Joe Biden will receive German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the White House on Friday, his press office reported. During their meeting, the two leaders will mainly talk about the war in Ukraine.

This is the second time Scholz is being welcomed in Washington since taking office as chancellor. He first visited the White House in early February 2022, when Russian troops were on the border with Ukraine. The invasion began two weeks later, on 24 February.

The new visit demonstrates "the quality of transatlantic relations," Scholz said on Thursday as he left for the USA. He said the two men regularly held telephone or video conference talks, but also needed to speak face to face from time to time.

This was necessary in a situation where many things have become difficult, he stressed.

No joint press conference was scheduled after Friday's meeting.
