Founded in 1967, AIS is a world-renowned International Baccalaureate school offering the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. Students aged 2½ to 18 are accepted and English is the official language of instruction at AIS. We take a balanced approach that focuses on learning through inquiry and the hands-on, active engagement of each student. We stimulate young minds by offering individualised attention within small class sizes, a 7-1 student-teacher ratio on average.
AIS offers world-leading, holistic education in a multicultural, respectful and safe environment. Our innovative young learners work hard both inside and outside of the classroom.
Welcome home
“AIS feels like our home away from home!” Many of our community members, from all over the world, have uttered these words and that is something AIS takes pride in. Parents appreciate our longstanding educational excellence, but they also love our convenient and safe location in the leafy suburbs just north of Antwerp. Whether you travel by car, train or bicycle, getting to AIS is easy for the entire family.
Our school is home to more than 50 different nationalities, all part of a close-knit community. While English is the language of instruction, many other languages are also taught including Dutch, French, Spanish, German and more. Recently, we celebrated International Mother Language Day where 29 languages were represented.
We challenge, support and empower our learners to excel across all academic fields and offer a wide range of athletic, creative and community service opportunities too. At AIS, we believe this fosters an understanding of emotional and social wellbeing.
Following graduation, our students attend top universities all around the globe and many of our alumni are leaders within companies and organisations worldwide. Our IB Diploma Programme students earned a 100% pass rate over the past three years, from 2020-22.
AIS since 1967. A modern path to success
Our campus features a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a 350-seat theatre and new STEM facilities. The STEMzone emphasises the development of creativity, innovation, analytical thinking and collaboration through STEM studies. It includes science labs, fabrication labs, makerspaces, mathematics areas, IT spaces and common collaborative learning spaces. There is often an ‘A’ for ‘Arts’ added to STEM, transforming it into STEAM. However, due to the physical separation of our Fine Arts Centre and its 350-seat theatre, the decision was made to only name it the STEMzone.
In this age of technology, students bring their own laptops to school beginning in Grade 5. This gives each student the flexibility and convenience of using a single device both at school and at home. There are technology-based learning periods for our younger students in Primary School. They use school-provided laptops and tablets during this time.
We follow a set of four values at Antwerp International School: respect, sustainability, caring community and commitment. We believe that holistic learning leads to self-determination and that holistic education allows children to take learning into their own hands. Here, education is not just about transferring knowledge from teacher to student, it is also about forming a personality that includes all of our values and attitudes. This includes career ambitions. When a student graduates from AIS, they are well prepared to enter the world as a person who contributes to the betterment of the world.
Inspiring successful futures
AIS and its teachers develop confident and enterprising individuals who make informed choices. Our Secondary School students work closely with our Career and University Counsellor to prepare for life after school. They work together to explore a wide range of possibilities for their lives and to apply for admission into colleges and universities worldwide. In recent years, some of our students have been admitted into the University of Oxford, the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, Imperial College London and many other prestigious post-secondary colleges.
AIS hosts a University Fair each year and students also learn about different professions from experts during our annual Career Event. We develop individuals that will have a positive impact on themselves, the community and the world around them.
Our beautiful campus is always buzzing with activity, even during the summer months when there is a wide range of extracurricular activities offered to our students. During the school year, our students also excel outside the classroom. They compete in the Northwest European Council of International Schools (NECIS) sports tournaments and grow together in the visual and performing arts. AIS is also a proud member of the oldest accrediting association in the United States, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
At AIS, we believe in inquiry-based learning, challenging and supporting students to construct their understanding. We foster natural curiosity and encourage the pursuit of knowledge both individually and as a group. Each student’s conceptual understanding and competency are at the centre of this dynamic process. Together, we can unlock your child’s full potential.
