More than three-quarters (77%) of Belgians pay their monthly bills on time, according to the ‘European Consumer Payment Report from debt collector Intrum released on Thursday.

This figure represents a 12% increase compared to last year. The main reason for late payments is forgetfulness (40%), followed by a lack of funds (28%) and technical problems (28%).

Intrum’s report highlights a positive trend compared to previous years.

In 2023, one in three Belgians reported struggling to pay bills on time due to high inflation and rising energy prices.

This effect seems to have gone down, but consumers are still prioritising essential expenses and postponing "luxury purchases" and holidays.
