The number of recipients of food banks remained high in 2024 but declined slightly from the previous year, the Belgian Federation of Food Banks (FBBA) announced at its annual press conference on Friday.

The FBBA has urged the Federal Government to introduce additional tax incentives for food donations and structural funding.

Approximately 209,000 Belgian residents sought help from one of the 698 associations affiliated with food banks each month in 2024. This marks a slight decrease from 2023 (214,000 monthly beneficiaries).

However, the FBBA noted a drastic 50% increase in the number of beneficiaries over the past ten years. "Amid inflation, more and more people in need are struggling," highlighted the FBBA.

In total, around 26,000 tonnes of food were distributed to member associations in 2024, equating to 52 million meals.

The Federation has observed a decrease in food donations from the food industry and markets.

To ensure the weekly distribution of five balanced meals to each beneficiary, the FBBA had to purchase 1,600 tonnes of food with financial support from private and public donors.

While pleased with the initiatives announced in the new government's agreement to stimulate donations (including tax incentives), the FBBA has called on the 'Arizona' government to "extend the financial compensation planned for the reduced European Social Fund Plus budgets for 2024 and 2025 to 2026 and 2027."

"More than ever, we need the support of businesses, individuals, and public authorities. Whether it's food donations, financial contributions, or long-term volunteering, every bit of help counts to support families in need," concluded FBBA president Piet Vanthemsche.
